Climate Smart Cities

Cities need to adopt comprehensive climate responsive development to ensure the health and well-being of residents.

India accounts for nearly 6.5% of the global greenhouse gas emissions with almost half of the country’s emissions having urban origins - emanating from transport, buildings and waste. This coupled with rapid depletion, and degradation of our natural resource base, escalates the occurrence of more frequent and severe climate events.

While India is on track to see the rise of 7 megacities with a population of 10 million each, Indian cities remain vulnerable to factors like water stress, heat island effect, urban floods, droughts, and deteriorating air quality.

Along with developing sustainably, cities need to develop pathways for an equitable transition to a low-carbon, climate-resilient economy


WRI India Ross Center has adopted a four-pronged strategy to advance the Climate Smart Cities agenda -

  1. Develop research and capacity building material on supporting Indian Cities develop a road map for decarbonization.

  2. Providing support to Climate Smart Cities initiative of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) as a knowledge partner.

  3. Providing hand-holding support to cities for assessing climate change impact readiness along with technical assistance on mitigation and adaptation measures.

  4. Helping create a platform for peer-to-peer learning and knowledge dissemination, across the entire ecosystem, by focusing on climate change impact, action areas, good practices and plausible solutions.

  • The TCO EValuator takes into account the various cost components and usage details of a vehicle during the period of utilization and provides you with a TCO/ km for acquiring and using the vehicle.
  • You can input capital and operations costs in the sheet (in various currencies and measurement systems) to determine the effect of various components on the TCO of a vehicle.
